We use a stump grinder with hardened cutting teeth to grind the stump to below ground level. Grinding only the main stump buttress and the closest lateral roots to a depth of 30-45cm is standard industry practice. We will tailor our approach and the depth we grind to depending on the situation.
Our tree surgeons will use the stump fragments to backfill the hole left where the stump was. These fragments will initially lay above ground level but quickly compost down over time. Backfilling the hole adds nutrients to the soil and helps prevent accidents.
