Tree Survey
Before carrying out any remedial work on a tree it pays to have a thorough survey carried out. Boswells Tree Surgeons use the latest diagnostic techniques including tree endoscopy and resistography to make sure that the most appropriate action is taken to conserve and manage your trees. See the Tree Surveying page for more information.

Crown Thinning or Canopy Thinning
A Crown or canopy thin involves the removal of a proportion of secondary branches to produce a uniform branch structure without altering the overall size or shape of the tree. It results in improved light levels passing through the canopy thus reducing shading. It reduces the wind resistance of the crown and reduces the loading upon the limbs of the tree. It is a very effective technique demanding a high level of skill as the selection of the branches to be removed requires careful consideration.

Crown Lift or Canopy Lift
Crown or canopy lifting is removal of the lowest branches and preparing of lower branches for future removal, normally to give a uniform height from ground level. Good practice dictates crown lifting should not normally include the removal of large branches growing directly from the trunk as this causes large wounds which may jeopardise the long term future of the tree. Common reasons for crown lifting are to bring more light and give access for traffic. In the U.K. common practice dictates clearance for vehicles is 5.2 metres (~17 feet), and for pedestrians 2.5m (~8 feet).

Crown Reduction or Canopy Reduction
Crown or canopy reduction is used to reduce the height and/or spread of the crown of a tree by the removal of the ends of branches whilst maintaining the tree's natural shape as far as practicable.

Felling
The complete removal of a tree down to ground level. This work involves the careful lowering of branches and timber so as not to cause damage or destruction to surrounding plants and structures. The stump will be left as close to the ground as possible but will be above soil level.

Fruit Tree Pruning
Without training and pruning, fruit trees will not develop proper shape and form. Properly trained and pruned trees will yield high quality fruit much earlier in their lives and live significantly longer.

Target Pruning
This entails a small reduction to specified area of a tree in a sympathetic manner to clear property, lights, signs or other objects and is a very cost effective way of managing a tree. Target pruning is not only effective in cases where branches encroach or grow towards a building, but can also be applied as a specialised technique for decay control. We will be happy to survey and advise with no obligation on your part

Tree Pruning
Apart from rare occasions no single operation is usually sufficient to maintain a tree, rather a combination of techniques carefully tailored to a tree's requirements. This may consist for example of a Crown Thin, Removal of deadwood and a Crown Lift (See above). It is referred to as Tree Pruning.

All our tree works are conducted to a standard to exceed the requirements of BS 3998 (1989) 'recommendations for tree work' and comply with industry best practice and current Arboricultural standards.

Formative Pruning
Pruning during the early years of a tree's growth, formative pruning helps to establish a sound branch structure or desired shape while helping to correct defects or weaknesses.

Pollard
A frequently misunderstood term, and used in two different contexts. Traditionally and still commonly used this term describes the removal of all branches from the trunk. Mature trees that have not been pollarded before are generally not suitable candidates for this type of pollarding due to the large wounds that such treatment produces which may jeopardise the long term future of the tree. A less frequently used definition can mean the regular (annual of biannual) pruning back of small branches to the same point resulting in the formation of a ?pollard head'. Pollarded trees usually require regular treatment of re-growth.

Drop Crotching
Shortening branches by pruning off the end back to a lateral branch which is at least 1/3 of the diameter of the removed branch.

Branch Removal
Following inspection it may be necessary to remove specific branches of a tree. This may be necessary to clear a property or sight line, or to give access for vehicles and machinery.

Hedges and Hedge Management
Boswells Tree Surgeons can prune your hedges any size, any where. From ornamental to wild and rural, 3 feet to 100 feet, reducing height and width or just clipping, creating a neat and tidy form. Like all plants, hedges can be affected by disease or fungus. Correctly planned hedge maintenance can keep down the risk of infection, and by timing the pruning of your hedges, the best value can be obtained. We usually recommend hedge trimming in September to October when growth is at its minimum.

We will advise on the most cost effective long term management. Supplying fixed prices for each option.

We will advise on legal obligations including the 'High Hedges Act'.

Our professional arboricultural advisor can also explain and design pruning styles and regimes to reduce neighbour conflicts.

Our skilled pruning team will arrive at the agreed date and time. Works will proceed with minimum disruption and all arisings will be cleared where required.

Conifers
Whether it is an individual specimen tree or a conifer hedge (such as Leylandii), conifer trees need proper treatment to keep their growth under control whilst maintaining their health.

Stump Poisoning
Poisoning a tree stump to prevent re growth and allow stump to slowly decay. Because of the risk to other plants, animals and children, Boswells Tree Surgeons do not employ this method. To remove a tree stump, we normally recommend the use of a stump grinder. However, if you are considering stump poisoning, or can't get access for a stump grinder, we will be happy to advise on the alternative methods.

Stump Grinding
Our stump grinder will remove any tree stump in most locations. The machine has a cutting wheel fitted with tungsten carbide teeth. Revolving at high speed the stump, roots and adjacent soil is cut into small particles. The machine will go through most door ways, needing a minimum of only 34? wide.

The by-product from stump grinding is a mixture of soil, wood and small stone. We can remove this debris for you, but find the majority of customers distribute the arisings around the garden as a more economical option.

Removal of Deadwood
As the name suggests this procedure consist of the removal of deadwood from the canopy of the tree. This can consist of small branches up to major limbs whose removal is essential to maintain a safe environment and to promote the future health of the tree.

Planting
Boswells Tree Surgeons can supply and plant a huge range of trees, shrubs and hedging plants. We are able to construct high specification planting pits in landscaped areas including local authority sites. We can advise on species and locations for planting and can construct planting schemes from simple replacements up to large-scale commercial projects. In conjunction with our other services we are able to remove a dead tree, grind out the stump and plant a suitable replacement in a single visit and even provide fixed term aftercare, including watering within a single contract.

Approved by local borough authorities, Boswells tree surgeons are often called upon to manage planting, tree and hedge management on industrial and commercial developments as well as new housing estates and road schemes.
